While the Czech Republic is land-locked and without a navy, MSD magazine feels the following technology and application are relevant for protecting shore-based naval assets and bases.

A extensive testing regimen called “CW Trial” sought to verify if a Passive ESM Tracker, (e.g. VERA-NG by ERA, photo right)) can detect and track unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) while to broadcast Continuous Wave signals (CW). ERA experts joined several units of the Czech Armed Forces and used two sets of VERA-NG systems and several types of drones.

The CW Trial was held at Czech military ranges, during the last week of April. Its goal was approving previous VERA-NG´s CW capability tests, newly implemented in Passive ESM Tracker (PET). Other trials held several months before the CW Trial event, proved that the VERA-NG system can detect and track even small UAS from such distances. The ability “to see” and track drones from a distance of dozens of kilometres are a result from ERA intensive development in the domain of multistatic surveillance systems.

Czech Armed Forces used many UAS as targets in this most recent trial phase that resulted in detecting UAS signals, which led to fully approving previous tests. In the recent trials, the UAS were flying separately – also in parallel at times – to try to distinguished one from another with the VERA-NG. All UAS were spotted at once and tracked for each unit’s entire flight.

ERA is aware that developing Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) is one of the greatest technological challenges for air defence solutions today. Using UAS in conflict continues to increase and the Czech Armed Forces experts consider early warning detection of such threats as the key advantage in effectively opposing them.

PET technologyis a recognised perspective solution for UAS surveillance, considering tracking capability for the mini-class UAV category is more than 100 kilometres and micro-class UAV category up to 40 kilometres, whereby modern 3D active radars provide effective coverage up to 10 kilometres away.

By supplying a Deployable PET (DPET) system to the Czech Armed Forces (photo right), the armed forces’ vigilence will broaden in the evolving era of menacing UAS.
